A COLLECTION OF FRIDA KAHLO

I fell in love at first site with altered vintage watercolor paint tins when I first saw one created by Connie Govea Stuart published in an earlier issue of Somerset Studio. There is something magical about these used old paint tins. I love the way the dried up crumbling colors speak of another time and yet even after years of storage, a little water brings them back to life to begin another chapter.

I started making these a few years back with different themes. Only recently did I drag one out and begin playing with it again. Once I made the first one with Frida Kahlo, I was hooked..line and sinker.
This is the collection of my Frida Kahlo vintage watercolour paint tins. There are eleven of them. The idea was to complete a series of 12. The last one will be a vintage paint box from the 1800's and is currently a work in progress in my studio.

Thank you for viewing my collection. They are currently offered for sale in my Etsy shop with more pictures of each one.

The last one .. A Vintage Antique Paint Box will be available soon and posted here first.

Stay Inspired and I hope you do something YOU love today!

  1. I am sitting here in awe! This is the most astonishing collection. Kim, I remember that article. A friend in England had kindly sent me a couple of old issues of Somerset Studio which she thought I might like, instead of putting them in the rubbish bin - that friend's gesture opened my mind and eyes and I've never looked back! This is on my Wish List of projects but I cannot source old paint tines.
I surely hope you have this collection on display. I need to scroll back up for another look because I know there will be details I missed first time around.
Kim, thank you for sharing your astonishing artistry.

    1. Thank you dear friend. I think they are one of my favorite things to make. I love knowing that someone somewhere used these tins and painted with a dream in their heart. They each just speak to you in different ways. I look forward one day to seeing where one of them will guide you..someplace beautiful, I know.

  4. Oh, Kim. There is such wealth here: of emotion, energy, ideas and beauty. Because Frida transmuted such pain into a lifetime of vibrantly expressed beauty, it's natural to turn to her as an Archetype as we navigate our own pain filled joyful existence. I'm moved and delighted by the way you have used each paint container as a metaphor for the ingredients we select from as we each build a life. Thank you.
